In 1993, a new alliance was formed to participate in the challenge of the broadcast industry, the alliance which would bring about changes and improvements in the industry and would carry a stronger voice to meet the increasing demands for improvement and development in the dynamic world of broadcasting. Armed with a strong sense of responsibility and renewed spirits, in pursuit of a common problem in the industry, then the VAT issue, a group of blocktiming practitioners composed of independent producers, bonded together to form the nucleus of the Independent Blocktimers Association of the Philippines, or simply IBA.
As the country's premiere legitimate blocktiming organization in the Philippines, IBA has committed itself to the following purpose: to collectively seek solutions to the common problems affecting the blocktiming industry; to contribute to the well-being of the advertising industry by urging the members to continue producing and blocktiming highly acceptable local programs and providing regular and foreign series and specials; to help in the continuous development of the of the advertising industry by providing good and highly acceptable programs; to act as an extension of the network by completing the networks programming thrust for its share of audience.
In summary, IBA's thrust revolves around a three-point objective scheme:
- to work for the professionalism of the blocktiming industry and to participate in the and contribute to the upliftment of program standards;
- to enhance and make more effective the working relationships between IBA and the networks and to work in close consultation with advertisers and advertising agencies, as well as other industry related organizations, in all trade matters affecting each other mutually;
- to foster social responsibility among blocktiming practitioners and help protect the welfare of the general viewing public.
Since its inception in 1993, the Independent Blocktimers Association of the Philippines has taken great strides. In its initial year, headed by an interim board composed of well-respected members of the industry, it already played an active role in seeking solutions to pressing problems, such as supporting the networks for the approval of VAT exemption for the broadcast industry. It has also started making vital representations in bigger industry groups such as the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster Sa Pilipinas and the Advertising Board of the Philippines, the umbrella organization of all advertising associations.
After six years of successful existence, the IBA proved worthy of its cause. Affiliation in the KBP and a seat in the AdBoard were realized, made more significant when its current Chairman Ricky Velez was elected treasurer during IBA's first year of affiliation. It has managed to unite its members and carry a stronger voice or the blocktiming industry through its different projects and activities, which were in direct coordination with the networks?
In the years to come, IBA remains strong and determined to continue its promise to serve as vital link between the blocktiming industry and its members to the networks, the advertising world and the viewing public. Armed with a dynamic spirit and faith, complemented by its existing partners in the industry, the IBA has indeed conquered the best of both world --- Broadcasting and Advertising.
